OOTD: Boots Made For Walkin'

This winter has proven to be a harsh one, for me anyway. You see, snow here in the suburbs of Denver doesn't really stick around. We have plenty of beautiful sunny days between random snow fall; the stuff melts within a day or so. But with the last winter storm this nasty stuff has stuck around way too long. Hence the oh so not glamorous OOTD. This is reality. Sometimes functionality beats out fashion. I'm doing my best to combine the two.

I bought these combat-ish boots last year, still available here. When I told my friend (that's you Brenda) about this purchase she just giggled. She knows that I am a 5" heel kinda girl. As much as I love me a fierce heel, they don't do so well on the slick walkways. So here I am Brenda, boots and all, giggle away. This is my interpretation of mountain wear.

OOTD: Wildcat

Long time no OOTD. Wow it has been ages since one of these posts! I was headed out the door tonight and thought I should snap a quick pic. I recently celebrated a birthday and picked out this cardi for hubby to gift to me. Aren't those the best kind of gifts?

A good animal print, like lace, is very hard to come by; a fine line between chic and trashy. When I saw this season's Wildcat pattern in JCrew's catalog I knew I had to have. I was immediately drawn to the scoopneck blouse, but @ $118 thought it was a little steep. The same pattern in Jenna's Cardigan was at a better price point and more functional. I pounced (tee hee) on it when they offered 40% off and free shipping.

The temps here have been ridiculously cold, so instead of going the standard route of the statement necklace, I opted for a warm cowl neck scarf adorned with a Chanel pin.

Let's talk about this pin for a minute. I've always lusted for a classic Chanel multi-strand necklace, but so out of my price range. This little pin was a good alternative, more affordable and more versatile. Most of the time I wear it on a long chain necklace. It would be cute on almost any hat or pinned on a classic cardigan. Just another "investment piece" you can add to the list of "must haves."

You might have noticed I did a little revamping to the family room. I've been busy, hence the absence from bloggerville. Sorry peeps I'm trying. Hope all my blogger friends haven't deleted me from your readers. Try to be back soon!

Jasper the Elf

I am nothing but a tease. Promises of more posts and then poof gone again.

I've actually jumped on the Pintrest bandwagon and soo completely addicted! My crafting urges have been dormant until I discovered Pintrest. The little princess' birthday was earlier this month and I went over and above for a perfect princess party. That event deserves a post of it's own. I promise, promise, promise, promise to post. Just because I already have tons of pics and I must share because it was such a great little party.

Now that the holidays are upon us I am having a little fun in honor of Pintrest sparking my creativity flame. I bought this funny little elf when I was "scratching my itch" at Nordstrom last year. I actually helped out again this holiday, but it is very sporadic as I had already planned to spend Thanksgiving with my family in CA. My old manager was relocated to another store so it really wasn't the same without her. Her passion for styling was contagious. I was disappointed that I couldn't work with her again this year. The upside is that I still get the discount!!

But I digress. Elf on the Shelf was kind of an old tradition that resurfaced and now he is everywhere. Elf on the Shelf is Santa's eyes and ears, he reports back to Santa every night, and each morning he finds a new spot to rest. This year instead of just moving Jasper around the house, I am having a little fun with him. Take a look at his first two days with us.

Jasper is normally clad in a read suit with white collar. Since this was his debut for the season, he really wanted to make a grand entrance. Ken, Barbie's beau, generously loaned him this fabulous suit. Doesn't Jasper look dapper?

Jasper was having a little fun doing wheelies on a bike he found in the playroom. He saw a couple Xmas ornaments hanging out and asked them if they wanted to go for a joy ride.

OOTD: Déjà vu

So this whole Missoni for Target turned to to be a cluster you know what. The only thing I was really pining for was the throw, which I did not get. I thought that nobody in Colorado suburbia would really care about or even know about this designer collab. I thought I could waltz into my local store anytime to pick up my lovely throw and take a gander at zigzag galore. Wrong. I, along with Target, underestimated the hype surrounding this line. My haul included the pumps (which I think are adorable, but seemed like one of the least desired items), a pair of tights, a couple silky scarves, and a skirt. I also ordered a sweater online. We'll see if that one is a keeper.

OOTD: No Pressure

One of my BFF's mentioned that she missed my posts, so being a dear friend I am obliging. I'm not going to lie, it takes time for pictures and thinking of something to write about. As it is, I feel like there is not enough time in the day to get all I have to do done. For this reason, posting fell by the wayside.

Besides the lack of time, I started feeling like my posts were not up to par compared to other fashion blogs brimming with glamorous locale and artistic photography by semi-pro photographer boyfriends.

Then I realized that the blogs I looked forward to reading were the ones that were more personalized. So I am going to take the pressure off myself. I'm not going to care (as much) if I didn't get the best picture or if my post has multiple grammatical errors, run on sentences, etc. Not that my grammar in previous posts were 100% correct.

So with that said, I am here to warn that future posting may be more frequent and less wordy. And I can't guarantee that I won't disappear for weeks at a time.

Here's my OOTD. I didn't bother to shoo the dog away, nor did I wipe off the coffee table. No pressure right?

Labor of Love: Stenciled Imperial Trellis

I'm here to do a phantom post. I make no promises to come back soon. I feel like a bad boyfriend who falls off the face of the earth and then appears only when convenient. I had to pop in just to show y'all a little of what I've been up to in my absence from bloggerville.

When I gave birth to the little princess, almost four years ago, I did two impulsive things: 1. chopped my hair to sport an angled bob and 2. painted my dining room wall a dark chocolate brown. Word to the wise, new moms stay away from scissors and paint brushes.

At the time I thought that a dark accent wall would be a good...um accent. This accent wall was a good idea in theory. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It took me over three years to come to the realization that the dark brown wall was flat, it was lacking something. It needed texture and not the knock down drywall texture it already had.

I toyed around with the idea of painting tone on tone, flat/semi-gloss, thick horizontal stripes. I couldn't commit. Then I realized what I really wanted was the look of wall paper. I'm late to the Imperial Trellis bandwagon, but I luv it! The only problem? How does one wallpaper over textured walls? Oh and did I mention that Imperial Trellis wallpaper is $460 a roll and I would need about 10 rolls just for this wall. Jaw dropping I know.

Then I saw this. Stenciled Imperial Trellis. Brilliant. When I think of stenciled walls, what comes to mind is cheesy, grandma, and grape vines. Stenciling has come a long way and when I saw this DIY, I thought it was a daunting project. I was so sick of this boring brown wall that I just crazy enough to do it. It was a labor of love and I wanted to pop back in and show you the results. I even found similar fabric to make pillow covers for the chairs in the sitting area across from the dining room and valances for the oddly high dinning room windows.

When I finished the wall I ended up re-staining the dinning room table and captain's chairs. I also swapped out the the other four chairs with contrasting white french bistro chairs from Cost Plus. On the right side of the this pic is where I used to snap my outfit pics. Perhaps there will be more of that. No promises.

Even closer....don't look too hard, you'll see the flaws. I knew going in with the textured walls the outcome would not be perfect. I actually like the rawness of the finished product.

Pillow covers I had made for the club chairs. This fabric is hard to find, but you could catch a yard or two on etsy or ebay. The Hermes tray is a DIY. I had vinyl letters custom cut. It was one of the easiest projects I've ever done. The tray sits on an IKEA Rens sheepskin rug.

Another DIY project for the bar area. A floating wall shelf with wine glass rack, both from Lowes.

Back and on the East Coast

It has been ages. My apologies for my disappearance. Life can get super busy. Though I am a stay a home mom, I help my husband run his business...technically I am a majority partner and so it goes without saying I am the boss. He does the heavy lifting and I do what he needs me to do keep the ship afloat.

Not only have I been super busy, but I lost my camera. ::bangs head on wall for leaving it behind on a flight:: That was a total bummer. But now I am back and armed with a new camera. Yay!

This week the princess and I traveled to PA embarking on an annual girls beach trip. This will be our first time on this all girls trip. I'll have to do my best to keep out of the drama. I will say it is kinda weird visiting the in-laws without the husband. I have a good relationship with the in-laws and living in a different time zone helps, but ask me again in 4 days. There will be 10 females on this trip and a 5 hour car ride to Rehoboth Beach, DE. Pray for me please.

We arrived a day early to give us a buffer in between travels. I spent part of the day breaking in my new camera. It is a Canon T2i. Canon has this great loyalty program where they offer 20% off of their refurbished cameras for sending in any old Canon camera (working or not). I took advantage of this program to take the sting off replacing my lost camera. If you are in the market for a DSLR or a point a shoot this is a great option.

The picture below is of a Spring House located on their property. Water flows below this quaint little building. The flowing water maintains a constant cool temperature inside the building throughout the year. It was used for refrigeration many years ago before the advent of electric refrigeration. My husband and I were married next to this Spring House 8 years ago.

Hmm that title is kinda questionable now that I see it. Oh well! Pinch me because I didn't wear green. I am realizing that I need more color in my life. Take my outfit for instance. These are the predictable colors I would pick in a line up. A quick little shout out to Chloe for being the enabler that she is. Chloe dishes on deals like nobody's business on See Chloe Shop. I got my Tracey Reese jacket on super sale a couple months ago (seen on Chloe here) which I am surprised that it is still available here.

Moral of the story is that I need to break out of the black, white and beige that is my wardrobe. Here's a start.

We do not have an H&M here in Denver yet. My neighbor is traveling to a state where there is one, so I'm sending her on a mission. No guarantees, but I am crossing my fingers that she can find these two colorful pieces. For me accessible fashion equates to Target because I am there at least once a week. I've said this before, they do a great job at making the place a one stop shop. When you have a kid there is always a need for Target runs. I picked up this maxi dress the other week during one of these runs. Amazingly the dress is not super long on me, it's a XS in case you are wondering.

One thing that I find is that Target is horrible with their product pics. I can't quite pinpoint it, whether they need a new photographer or better models or both. The product pic for this dress does not justice for this lovely dress.

I am sitting here decompressing and reflecting on the day that went by in a nano second. Sometimes I feel like there's not enough time in the day, but as I am in it and living it, it's like I can barely keep my head above water. Bare with me while I have a moment.

Ok, now that that's done with we can move on with the outfit of the day. My mood today (besides frazzled) was vibing 70's. I am secretly loving that flares are back, not that they ever left my closet. Flares just had a little hiatus and I "filed" them away for a later date.

Still vibing 70's and pursuing the daily flash sales I noticed that Gilt was hosting a fun contest to submit style boards. So my frazzled self decided to waste away valuable time to put together a little 70's glam look. My priorities are pretty screwed. There's always tomorrow....and probably be at it again, putting together another look for a different category. Ha! Take a lookie loo. I would beg you for votes, but it's not that kind of contest.

Could you not die for that cropped leather jacket?! How about that orange Celine clutch? Ugh why can't I just win the lottery?

I feel like I have the winter doldrums. Spring can't get here fast enough, but at the same time I feel like I need to get more wear out of my favorite pieces and items that have yet made it out of the closet this season. This is me doing minimalist. Gah the winter doldrums is just sucking the energy right out of me. Sorry guys.

Last night we had a last minute house guest arrive. Last minute as in calling us at 3pm to tell us he will be arriving at 11pm. He is a good friend of hubby's and a bachelor so I'm sure doesn't mind staying in a house that has been turned upside down by a 3 year old.

This bachelor has a thing or two to learn. I found little princess sitting on the rim of the toilet bowl because he didn't put the toilet seat down. Needless to say I was a little mortified. I'll whip this bachelor into shape before he leaves.

This is a DIY creation crafted by yours truly. Had this on my running list of projects. The tray was purchased about a year ago and I finally got around to getting custom made stickers. Couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.

OOTD: Swingin' It

I thought I'd give a quick update to the capelet that I posted about here (you can buy it here.) I can't decide if it is a capelet or an ultra cropped swing coat. I will say that it is a darling little alternative for days when there is a slight chill in the air. Not a huge fan of the extra large buttons, I'm thinking about switching out the buttons to give it that military inspired look similar to the Ferragamo caplet Natalie Portman was rocking. (Just one more thing to my running list of projects.) With the length so short and the bell like sleeves it was hard to find something in the closet that worked with it. I played it safe and threw on a simple long sleeve tee. No muss no fuss.

Taking InvenTORI

Our trips to L.A. usually consist of whirlwind tours of our favorite restaurants and visiting dear friends. While catching up with our friends, owners of the famed Mark's Garden, I couldn't help but notice an adorable little shop a few doors down called InvenTORI. It so happened to have just opened on the day before on Valentine's Day and the proprietor was the one and only Tori Spelling. I popped in for a quick lookie loo and vowed to return since hubs and I were already running late for a lunch date on the other side of the Valley.

I returned later that afternoon with BFF in tow. We first grabbed a drink and chitchatted at a new eatery called Sweet Butter Kitchen located right next door to InvenTORI. I was absolutely smitten with the decor. I would describe it as a modern Provencal, the entryway was adorned with all of my favorite garden herbs in rustic baskets and pots. I had to snap a few pics for inspiration. Now I can hardly wait for Spring to get a leg up on my English garden.

After a quick bite we headed over to peruse the antiquities at InvenTORI. Honestly this little store is a gem, regardless of who the owner is. It is a slice of shabby chic heaven. The space was not pretentious in any way. The price points were completely reasonable for chic vintage pieces. There was everything from furniture and wares from Tori's personal collection to new items, including soaps and lotions. I believe most if not all of the items in the store were hand picked by Tori, at least the vintage items anyway. There was a great variety of pieces from various eras, everything from primitive cutting boards to swanky bar-ware.

Tori and a camera crew happened to be filming a spot to promote the store. Um yeah, we weren't expecting to actually see Tori there! She was sweet as can be and even posed for a quick pic.

I ended up buying a lovely tray (I think from her personal collection) for $45, two vintage jelly jars for $7 each, and the cutest little cupcake stands at $12 a piece. Like I said, totally reasonable. I have a few weaknesses when it comes to decor items. For one, I can't resist a beautiful tray, it helps anchor random chachkies or even a stack of books. Another weakness is white dishware. I love that you can mix and match textures and as long as everything is white it will always somehow match.

I graciously thanked Tori for the picture and praised the store. I kinda wish I was better at small talk, I could have mentioned that I helped do the flowers at her first wedding! Maybe, it was better left unsaid, who wants to rehash previous nuptials?

All in all this place is adorable, I highly recommend! I know I'll be returning the next time I'm in town.

Sneaking Away

The fam and I snuck away to Los Angeles for a week to visit my parents. With the Nordies gig I had to bail on out our annual Thanksgiving visit. It was a requirement to work Thanksgiving day (starting at 6am mind you) so I had to make it up to my mom for missing out on a major family get together. I made sure that this trip would be an eventful one.

The little princess got to experience a few "firsts" on this trip. Most memorable had to have been Disneyland and the Santa Monica beach! There really is nothing like experiencing these precious moments through the eyes of little ones. I'm not sure who was more excited, me or her.

OOTD (Heavy & Light)

Although I have my look for less caplet on order, I decided to play off of the inspiration look from yesterday. I went though the my mental wardrobe catalog and remembered that I received this monogram Badgley Mischka silk scarf from Nordies as gratis.

Side note:for those of you who might be wondering, I am still officially employed by Nordstrom, more importantly I still qualify for their discount. ::whoop, whoop:: At the moment I am "on call" and potentially will be a roving stylist and back-fill for the three stores in the area. If it all works out this would be the ideal situation...crossing my fingers. I haven't mentioned anything to my hubby just yet. He's not thrilled with the idea but knows how happy and sane it makes me. No need to make waves yet.

On to the look, I played off of the lightness of the silk scarf against the heavy military coat. Pretty, simple and so classic.

I adore this Express coat, but would have loved it even more if I would have scored the deal I saw in stores recently. Don't get me wrong I bought the coat on sale, as I often try to do with all of my purchases, but now it is 40% of the $99 sale price....grrrr. I couldn't chance the coat selling out. I must way that it has been one of my go to coats this season.

What's Old is New Again

The cape is everywhere this season. I sported a few several years ago. What is old is new again right? And of course when celebs are sighted rocking a trend we all pine for the look for less. I absolutely adore this Ferragamo capelet coat Natalie Portman is wearing. No clue on the price, but I wouldn't be surprised if the the price point was in the four figures.

The cape can prove to be tricky on most figures. Natalie has the proportions right with the long and lean flare pant. Love 'em or leave 'em the flare pant is back. I love this entire look from head to toe.

Shyla Wool Capelet $34 at Bluefly

Capes are hard to find for petites as many of them are one size. One size capes would basically look like I'm wearing a Snuggie. After a quick search I found this adorable capelet coat and it is conveniently an additional 15% off. We'll see if it works out.

OOTD (Everyday Errands)

Getting back to blogging has proven to be difficult. I have no excuses really...well maybe one. This darn freezing weather! Today's high of -1 does put a damper on the fashion front. I mean, come on! How stylish can one look in below freezing temps? I barely even want to get out of cozy jammies.

I did take these OOTD pics a few days ago before the big freeze. Not a particular smashing outfit, just your everyday errand running outfit...comfy burnout tee, a Chanel-esque blazer, riding pants and a pair of nude ballet flats.

I'd like to point out that I scored these Banana Republic riding pants for $10. Doesn't read well in the pic, but they are super cute and look great on my non existent tush. And last year while everyone was on the hunt for the perfect nude heel, all moms should have been on the hunt for the perfect nude flat. The nude ballet flat is an ode to Black Swan. The shape of these flats mimic the shape of traditional Pointe shoes ballerinas wear. It appears that I am attempting a pirouette in that first pic....channeling my inner Black Swan.

Strutting the DVF Catwalk

Denverites (no clue how or why Denver residents coined this term) had a very rare treat last Friday. We were graced with the presence of the iconic Diane von Furstenberg. Nary is Denver a mecca for fashion, but for an event benefiting Children's Hospital we were treated to a real live fashion show debuting Diane von Furstenberg's Spring 2011 collection. Not only did we get an official fashion show, but Diane herself was here to present it. Wowza!!

I was super psyched. What to wear? What to wear? I couldn't buy anything off the scanty stocked racks of our local Saks or Neimans. It would be absolutely tragic to run into someone wearing the same signature wrap dress at the show. As I predicted there was a sea of wrap dresses at the show.

I chose to wear the ultra feminine DVF Pintura blush colored blouse with a Forever21 fit & flare skirt. I polished off the look with an unexpected pop of color in a plum DVF Powerstone Belt. I would have loved to be decked out in DVF from head to toe but I couldn't pull the trigger on the $500 leather Bolo skirt that I was lusting after. I can't express how much I love, love, love this blouse. The subtle ruffle detail in the collar, shoulder and sleeves is just to die for. I wish I could have gotten better pics of the entire look. I didn't have time to snap any pics before I left. This is the best pic I've got and it is not my greatest moment due to the fact that I downed a mojito shortly before this pic was taken.

For such a special event I took it upon myself to make an appointment with a MAC makeup artist at Nordstrom for a full makeup application. If you don't already know, the artists at the counter will technically do this for free. Ultimately they would like you to purchase a couple of items, but if you choose not to buy anything you wouldn't be charged for the session. I showed up to the appointment, told the makeup artist what I was wearing and let her work her magic. I gave her free reign to do what ever she wanted. She ended up doing a smokey eye with a nude lip. The artist showed me her application process along the way and I manage to learn a couple new techniques. I loved the outcome. I'll do a separate post of what I came home with.

It was a fun night and all for a good cause. After the event was over (and a few drinks) we took turns strutting our stuff on the DVF catwalk. I read that a net of $250K was raised for the Children's Hospital. A big shout out to MAX Boutiques for hosting the event and being able to lure such a big force in fashion to the Mile High City. Massive Reorg

I know, I know I promised to get back on track, but the past week I've been in some kind of nesting mode and completely reorganizing, cleaning and closet purging. I have to confess that I am a total box and bag hoarder. I have a problem throwing away any type of shipping box, shoe box or nice department store bags. I am coming to terms with my sickness. I had an intervention with myself and forced myself to part with some of the boxes and bags. Never mind the basement full of boxes, I'll have to deal with that another time. It's a sickness I tell you.

Chores and housework had completely fallen by the wayside over the past few months. The reorg frenzy started when the little princess felt that she was ready for "a big girl bed." We had to do some rearranging in her room in order to convert the crib into a full fledged "big girl bed." Some of you may remember the bedroom before as the nursery.

I purposely decked this room out in serene neutrals (Restoration Hardware Silver Sage) so that I didn't have to re-paint and redecorate down the road. Three years later, my plan worked out famously. The only things I added to the room were cute wall stickers and a Shabby Chic balloon shade, both from Target. Here is the debut of the little princess' big girl room....sob...sob.

Settling Back In

Whew! Working is...well, hard work. My time with Nordies has come to a close. Technically I'm hanging out on the sidelines. My manager really wants to get me in part time. There have been a few shifts with the current team so there is a good possibility of part time hours. But as I am settling back into life as I once knew, I'm not sure that I'm up for it. Not totally against the idea, just struggling with the decision. (At least I still get the discount in the meantime.) Three years ago it would not be a question, I'd jump at the chance. These days there is a guilt that hangs over me and an overwhelming feeling that there is something more important that is waiting for me at home...the laundry. Ha! Kidding. The importance of being present for my daughter has never been more apparent to me than now. Being a stay at home mom is trying, but now I can truly appreciate the opportunity.

Working as a visual stylist was on my bucket list and I am glad that I was able to pursue one of my passions just to say "I did it." Deep down being Sally Homemaker, a fashionable one of course, makes me pretty darn happy.

I'm getting back into the swing of things and looky what I made for a birthday party tomorrow!

I love that I can help dress mannequins and help pull the looks. Heck I love that I can stare at clothes and shoes all day. In a way it keeps me from actually buying since I am perpetually "window shopping".

It is pretty amazing what goes into visual merchandising. You may not notice when you are in the store, but the way the store is set up and the layout of each department subconsciously lures you to shop. To keep things fresh each department's floor plans are changed often and this means moving tables and fixtures. I am constantly moving and this makes it hard to be as fashionable as I would like to be. I've gotten pretty creative in coming up with outfits that revolve around flats.

This fringy Ann Taylor number has been hanging in my closet for a few months. I loved it at first sight. I adore the texture and it is a perfect piece to throw over jeans and a tank. To spice things up I layered a big blingy cougar pendant over a fringy gold necklace, both from Forever21. Grrrr.

I'll try to get pics of the store and the windows to show you lovely readers what I've been up to. Thanks to those of you who are still hanging around and bearing with me through sporadic posts.

::WAVES:: Hi-eeee!! I'm still here, just working my little tail off. I can't believe I've been gone for so long! Life has been pretty grueling with the alarm sounding off at 4:45am five days a week. Every morning I literally pop right out of bed for fear that I'll close my eyes and over sleep. This J-O-B is hard work! The control freak in me wakes up a little early to help hubby prepare for the morning to ensure smooth departures to preschool and daycare.

I have to hand it to my husband, he is a saint. For the past 3 weeks he has taken over many of my duties so that I can play stylist. Even though I get off at a reasonable time, my day often does not end until 10pm. After errands that I would normally do leisurely during the day have to be rushed and methodical. I often don't get home until early evening. This gives little opportunity for lookbook shots.

Things are finally starting to slow down now that the holiday installations are finally in the store. I managed to get home at a reasonable time to snap a few pics today. You may think that I go all out in my attire a retail atmosphere, but it is almost impossible to wear anything but flats. I'm up and down ladders, do laps around the store, and constantly lifting, bending and reaching.

My style as of late has been edgy with a feminine twist. Today's look is luxe lounge, where ultra comfy (Target sweats) meets classic luxury (JCrew blazer). I'm still loving me some Forever21. I recently picked up this extra chunky circle scarf from the men's section.

I promise I'll be back with more lookbooks now that work has eased up a little. Hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Mad Dash for Halloween

This time of year is always super busy. The in-laws on their way here for their annual trip to Colorado, Halloween events and the Princess' birthday all in the same week. I wasn't going to do much for Halloween this year because last year I had the crazy idea of combining Halloween and birthday together in one big bash. I thought I'd make it easy on myself this year, but two hours before sundown I decided I couldn't just let Halloween go. So on the eve of Halloween I made a mad dash down to the basement digging through my spooky stash. I managed to throw a few things together to turn the house into a fright fest. I even squeezed in a quick pumpkin carving lesson for hubby. How on earth he'd ever live through childhood without carving a pumpkin is beyond me.

When it comes to event details, I have a hard time with store bought anything and that includes costumes. I had my heart on dressing the little princess as Bjork this year. I convinced her that she was going to be a beautiful "swan princess." I was rolling on the ground laughing when she finally put on my Bjork creation. She's a good sport. Candy bribes didn't hurt either.

Chopping Block

Don't worry I'm still at my fab new job. It's my hair that was on the chopping block. Originally I was scheduled for a drastic cut and color with my stylist this past Tuesday, but since I had to start working as soon as I accepted, I had to cancel. My heart was set on having it all chopped off this week so I took my chances on a last minute appointment with a stylist I'd never seen. That's always nerve racking isn't it? Especially when I wanted to do something along the lines of an edgy bob. I think she did pretty decent job. I'll have see my stylist to color and maybe fine tune some layers.

You all are probably dying to hear how the new j.o.b. is going. The "shop" is what you would imagine; a couture fashion show running on repeat on the television, a wall of inspiration boards and schematics of the next sales blitz. On my first day they had me jump in to assist in a floor move in one of the men's departments. At the moment I am up to my ears in holiday garland with a little mannequin styling sprinkled in.

Today before opening a few of the designer brand departments presented some of the trends in the form of a mini fashion show, just heavenly. Of course my favorite piece was a fur collar military jacket by Elizabeth and James for....oh a mere $800. Surprisingly I have been minding my pocketbook. Having a hand in creating the look and feel of the store I now look at the store in a whole new light. In just a week I am looking past the clothing (GASP!) and viewing the "shopability" of the store. This could be a good thing, but I'm a little scared about the upcoming Half-Yearly sale next week. It can prove to be very dangerous.

My in-laws are coming into town next week and I have reserved a day with the MIL for some R,R&R. Rest, relaxation and retail therapy. One thing I love about my mother-in-law is that she loves to shop. Once a year she comes out and she is ready to $pend!

Scratching the Itch

OMG! OMG! OMG! Never thought this would happen. Remember my post here about my little dream to be a visual stylist? OMG, OMG, OMG. I just got hired on at Nordies as a seasonal visual stylist. This just seems crazy. I can't believe I'll be a part of the team that creates the look and feel of the entire store. Unreal.

This actually works out perfectly since the position is seasonal. I can test the waters, if you will. The hours are super early, but it works out perfectly in that I can still come home in the afternoon to hang out with the princess! There is a good chance that after the holidays a part time position will open up. Hopefully I can stick around an become a permanent fixture at Nordies!

Marathon Shopping & Villa Blanca

After our lovely stay in Santa Barbara we headed back to my old stomping grounds of Los Angeles. A trip to L.A. would not be complete without a little shopping. A "little shopping" ended up to be a day of marathon shopping. We started in Old Town Pasadena and hit up my two requirements Zara and H&M. Another favorite of mine is A/X Armani Exchange, their blazers are great fitting for petites. I bought the most adorable jacket at Armani and I managed to forget to pack it in my suitcase. My BFF and hostess as I write this is probably getting as much wear out of before she sends it out to me.

After a quick bite we headed to Beverly Hills. A quick stop at Neimans to pick up my leopard cardigan I spoke of here. Turns out that sales associates from different locations snub each other when it comes to sending out stock. My poor SA didn't end up getting the sale because the other SA's from other locations did not want to take her call. So I ended calling myself and found my cardigan without issue. What sharks! Anyhow, upon entry we put our proverbial blinders on because we did not want to tempt ourselves, especially with no major sales going on. My last requested stop was to Club Monaco. My has this placed changed, not only did I want everything in the store but the price points were much higher than I remember from my days in high school. I ended up buying a cute off the shoulder cashmere tunic. That was our final stop. We definitely did some damage that day. I probably should do a haul post so you all can run out and get some of the things that are currently in store. I'll work on that.

It seems that I brought the weather with me because L.A. was overcast and misty. Thank goodness the rain held off because I wore my YSL Tribute Platform Sandals. Can you believe I shopped all day in 5 1/2" heels? Impressive right?

After a rough day of shopping it was time for happy hour, dinner, dessert and many glasses of wine in between. We dined at the beautiful Villa Blanca. For those of you RHOBV (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) fans, Villa Blanca is owned by Lisa Vanderpump. For you Hills fans this was the infamous spot where the girls had a Spencer intervention with Heidi. This place was absolutely gorgeous and I don't just mean the wait staff. The all white interior decor and fabulous stark white flower arrangements was serene and feminine. It was a little slice of interior design heaven. The best part, the incredibly handsome wait staff. Given that it was a slow Monday evening, we had the most attentive wait staff catering to our every need. We oggled each time they stopped to fill our water glass or dropped off another round of drinks. Most memorable was a young buck that had a slight resemblance to Taylor Lautner. The other cutie was a Belgium born brute that spoke 6 languages. We giggled like school girls the entire night and ended up closing the restaurant. The night felt like an extension of our mini vacation. It was a blast. There is nothing like great friends, great food and reminiscing about old times. Love you girls!

Bacara was complete bliss. Beautiful grounds, spa and five star service.

My three gal pals and I headed to Santa Barbara for an overnight girls trip. It was a much needed mini vacay for each of us and for very different reasons. We all were looking to let loose, and started with a very early 3pm happy hour. After a couple hours of girl friend therapy we prettied ourselves up and headed to State street for a nice dinner then bar hopping. Partying in a college town like Santa Barbara was definitely...interesting. We paid the price the next morning. During breakfast we started to notice many of the patrons were at the resort to take advantage of the wellness offerings, yoga classes, hikes and spa treatments. Not us, there we were in the Bacara Bistro with the hair of the dog that bit us (aka bloody marys). Lets just say we had a rough start to our morning.

After we indulge in breakfast we headed over to the spa. I was the only one who was up for the inclusive pilates or yoga class. Majority ruled, so we detoxed in the jacuzzi, eucalyptus steam room and then the hot sauna. Bacara can be pricey, but the free classes and free usage of the spa amenities, between the four of us, was a great bang for the buck. We promised that the next time we came back it would be a wellness weekend.

The grounds were just gorgeous. It is a huge compound tucked into the foothills. Beautiful villas were nestled down cobbled paths and we were escorted around in golf carts. It is definitely a lifestyle that I can get used to. =)

Unfortunately, the weather was not optimal and we did not get to lay out poolside. It was a blast just to come together for hours upon hours of girl talk. I highly recommend this place for a relaxing stay with friends or a getaway with a significant other.

Neimans has been generous with me this past year. Not only did I just score $50 off at the lastcall.com launch. A couple weeks ago NM was giving everyone $50 off any Contemporary purchase. I bought a super soft Splendid drape cardigan for $18. Sweet.

Today I got to use a $50 gift card to "jump start" my shopping during their Neiman's Charge bonus points promo. Check your mail. Neiman's randomly sends these gift cards out to card holders.

Of course you can't really spend just $50, especially when they exclude beauty items. I couldn't resist their new shipment of cashmere. I picked out an ombre leopard print open cardigan. Of course being in the middle of the good ol' USof A they don't carry extra small, this means no instant gratification. Poo! I must wait for my cardi to ship from L.A., where I will be this weekend. I'm tempted to pick it up during my visit, but my SA's gotta make a buck. She looked all over the store so she earned her commission.

When I shop I like to feel good in what I'm wearing. It helps me feel motivated, not that I need much motivation to shop. ::tee hee, snort:: I am one of those shoppers who avoids the dressing room, particularly when I have the little one in tow. I usually try to throw things over what I already have on. I find that if I feel good in what I am currently wearing other things that I throw on look better. Know what I mean? I should really go in sweats so I look horrible in everything and save some $$. What fun is that?

So today I broke out a pair of boots to go with this adorable trench skirt. The skirt looks like the bottom of a trench coat. No? Can you believe it's from Forever 21? What would I do without that place? Tons of complements on this skirt ladies. It was a recent purchase so head over to your store ASAP. The Coach boots are from last season, but you can find fold over boots everywhere this season. A better part of my wardrobe may come from F21, but I splurge on boots. My tip of the day. Invest in a pair you love and you'll wear them for years to come.

How long is this cold going to linger? Blah! I really made the effort to get out of sweatpants today. But I ended up in a sweatshirt. LOL. In this day in age, thanks to Alexander Wang, sweatshirts are in vogue. The sweatshirt I'm wearing has a little tailoring at the bottom. Added a Loft sash belt as a necklace and it gives the look an edgy femininity. I am all about comfort today and to avoid looking sloppy I threw on a pair of jeggings. (I hate that word.) I'm not a huge fan of leggings because I feel naked in them but when you slap a pair pockets on the back, it seems more wearable.

My order from Neimans Last Called arrived. Originally posted here. Can I say LOVE? You can't beat a Michael Kors watch for $71. I now have watches in the three gold tones (white, yellow and rose.) Guess I can stop now.

I have sooo much to do before I leave so I gotta cut this short. I haven't even decided what I'm going to wear? The horror!

I must apologize for my absence. I have been under the weather the past few days. I haven't been lookin' so hot and therefore no outfit posts. I'll try to make up for it in the next couple of days but then I'll be jetting off to California this weekend for a much needed girls weekend. It was kind of a spur of the moment trip. Sometimes a couple hours on the phone just isn't enough to catch up or hash personal crises. We could all pay the hourly rate for therapists, but we thought the money would be better suited for a mini get away for all of us. No better therapy than getting away with friends. We'll be headed to the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara and we are over the moon excited. I've been land locked so it'll be nice to be close to the ocean chillin' poolside. Sorry no sandy feet for me. Even though we'll be steps away from the beach, I prefer a nice shaded cabana appropriately appointed with a cabana boy attending to my every whim. My days of sun worshiping are over. I'm in my 30's for goodness sake. I need to worry about premature wrinkles! I'm starting to think that bug I'm fighting off is a good thing. I dropped a couple lbs in a few short days. I'm all of a sudden bathing suit ready! Is that bad that I think this way? LOL. Not to worry, I'll gain it all back this weekend. Ha!

This is the second time I'll be leaving the kiddo and hubby alone. Leaving them is always such a big move for me. I am gradually accepting the fact that I have major control issues. (My friends aka free therapists have gracious pointed this out.) This will be a healthy exercise to relinquish some of that control. Being in S.B. will ease my anxieties a teeny bit. The wine tasting on the drive up will help with the rest of the anxiety. Oh I can't wait!

The word out on the street is that Topshop will be opening a flagship store in Chicago on Michigan Avenue Fall 2011. Lucky dogs! At least they are making their way west. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a store in Los Angeles. It's the next logical step. Right Topshop? Read more here.

For now if you can't get to the store in NYC there is always their online presence. Buyer beware, their items ship from the UK. It cost me a whopping $25 to send back items I wanted to return. Mulberry For Target in stores now

Hush hush. Soft launch of the Mulberry for Target collection. They did this with the Cynthia Vincent for Target collection as well, and now I have caught on.

The official launch date for this collection is October 10th and the collection is already in stores today, 10 days early. Part of the collection debuted on Gilt for early purchase. Didn't make much sense to pay shipping to buy ahead, plus the hassle of returning to Gilt.

They must have just put these out on the sales floor because there was no presentation or visuals for the line. No indication that the bags were apart of a capsule collection. The bag I purchased was one of the only bags not presented on Gilt. It is a faux leather bag and a pretty good one as far as faux leather goes. I like the simplicity of the design, but it kind of evokes a diaper bag kinda vibe. (Perhaps I've changed one too many diapers.) The hardware is a brushed gold and the turnlock has the inscription "Mulberry for Target." They could have left off the second half of that inscription. I get it, branding. The attrocity is the dangling heart charm. The two piece charm consists of an ultra glossy patent heart and a brushed gold metal heart, again inscribed with "Mulberry for Target". Thank goodness that these tacky charms are removable. I guess you can use it as a key ring or give it to my 3 year to flush down the toilet.

For the quality the price of $50 seems fair. It is a good size bag. And if you want a double duty bag that will serve as your purse and a diaper bag, this would suit you well. This was one of 3 larger bags. One other larger bag was a neon leopard. Need I say more, Ack! All the other bags were on the small if not teeny side. The crossbody mini bag was pretty cute but you can't fit more than your smart phone and lipstick. The structured bags were smaller than your old metal Superman lunchbox. I wasn't crazy about the patent on these structured bags.

Overall I think I bag I came home with was the best of the bunch. I'm on the fence about it. The $50 spent on this bag could go toward a bag that I really love. I better keep that receipt.

I am loving lace right now. It pairs so well with denim. Moms get out of that t-shirt and jeans rut, lace is so easy to wear. I belted this Forever21 lace top with a LOFT beaded sash. Scored this sash on sale just recently too. Seems to me people are afraid of the sash, there were tons on sale rack. Don't be afraid of the sash people! It is not just limited to your waist, wear it as a necklace. Chloe rocks the sash-necklace like no other.

On to a more pressing matter. Halloween is upon us I have been thinking about the princess' costume. She has been saying to me "I want to think about what I want to be for Halloween." I got news for her, it has already been decided. This will be the last year that I can decide for her. My days of calling the shots when it comes to certain things seem to be numbered. The little princess is finally coming to the realization that she can exercise her right to choose.

So this Halloween she will be Bjork, you know, in that ever memorable swan dress. I have already dropped hints that she will be a beautiful Swan Princess. I hope she buys it. If not I'm screwed.

LC Is Back!

The Hills didn't seem the same with Lauren Conrad's departure. The finale of the The Hills was a total let down when they played old clips of Lauren. So how excited was I when I heard that Lauren will be doing a MTV docu/reality/unscripted drama about trials and tribulations of launching her latest fashion line? Squee!!

Lauren's first go at in the fashion world was a bust. She regained her fashion legs with the success of her collection at Kohls. Now Lauren Conrad is teaming up with a few of her best friends on a new contemporary clothing collection, which she said was "more of a boutique line" with "a higher price point." I am dying to know who these friends are. I hope not Lo...snooze.

We can all tune into the process of how her fashion line comes together. Can't wait! Welcome back Lauren! We missed you!

It has been a while since the girls got together. With kids and schedules it seems more and more difficult to wrangle the gals for a night out. Thanks to my friend Stacy (Hi Stacy!!) she pushes for GNO's (girls night out.) I can learn a thing or two from that girl. She makes sure she gets her "me" time. If it wasn't for her none of us would get out.

We headed to the new Wine and Cheese Restaurant. This place was full of GNO goers. There were a couple of guys, but I can guarantee that they were duped by their girlfriends and will not be back any time soon. No hamburgers or beer here, this place was dedicated to lovely flights of wine and ultimate cheese platters.

I don't drink during week nights (I should according to fellow moms), but I might have found *my* wine of choice. A little somethin' somethin' to sip on during the week. I have been looking for a wine to call my own, but have never come across anything I love. What I had that night could possibly be it. I can't remember the name, so I'm going to have to go back. ::wink, wink::

What a fun little gathering place for what hubby calls a "hen party."

BTW, that is one of hubby's pesky dogs in the first pic. They are his dogs and I do not a lift a finger when it comes to them. They are sweet pouches, but I refuse to take on any more chores.

Seems like the trend in the fashion blogosphere is completely out of focus images. I don't quite get it. Is it supposed to be artsy? If so I'm throwing this one in for good measure.

I posted about the necklace I am wearing here. Hope you got it when I told you to because it is sold out now. That was quick! The off the shoulder top is by In Stitches (random brand) and can be found at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Last time I wore it here. Super cute and still hanging around if you look hard enough. The Chanel pouchette was my first Chanel ever, circa 2000. Perfect for nights out, it fits the essentials. And what can I say about my patent gray Miu Miu's L.O.V.E.

I'm not much of a tunic wearer. Tunics and leggings go hand in hand, but for some reason I feel naked in leggings. When I wear a tunic I make it a point to wear long flare jeans and some kind of heel to elongate my 5"1" frame. Otherwise I look like I am drowning in an over sized shirt. I've been on a skinny jean binge so it is nice to change things up a bit, don't cha think?

Moving on to beauty buys. I have to rave about two recent purchases; Maybelline Super Stay Lip Color and MAC Fix+ Spray .

Here's how this mom rolls, apply make up in the morning and don't think about it for the rest of the day. I just don't have time to think about re-applying during the day. I am the worst when it comes to color on my lips. One of my beauty essentials is long wearing lipsticks. I discovered Maybelline Superstay Lip Gloss two years ago when I barely had two minutes to buff a little powder on my face. During the first year of motherhood a good night's sleep was few and far between. To avoid looking like death every day, color on my lips was key. I needed something that I didn't have to re-apply. I started off the with Superstay gloss and moved on to Superstay Lipcolor. I think they are essentially the same, the only difference is that gloss comes with....ur....GLOSS and the lipcolor comes with a conditioning balm. Long wearing lip color is not for everyone, especially if you are prone to dry lips. The texture takes a bit of getting used to because your lips will feel dry, but the application does not look dry at all. I am wearing the Superstay Lip Color in Cabernet. It stays on ALL DAY.

I had been eying the MAC Fix+ Srpray, but talking myself out of it for months. There are so many mixed reviews that I was on the fence about it. I am glad I bought it becuase it really does make a difference. Here in the mile high state we have zero humidity, it is so dry. My makeup seemed to take a long time to settle in so I took a chance gave the Fix+ a whirl. It works like a charm. My skin looks dewy and not as made up. I wish I would have tried it sooner.

Just like that, without warning, I woke up to a chilly and overcast Fall morning. Our plan for the day was to go to a small town parade. Just another reason I kinda like the suburbs. A charming small town parade made up of local fire & police departments, high school marching bands and mom & pop businesses, all tossing candy and treats to wide eye kids along the parade route.

I wasn't ready for such an abrupt injection of Fall. I kinda panicked. Not for me, but for my little one. As worried as I have been about the little rugrat's consistent protest to eating she actually grew over the summer. I really need to get a leg up on the princess' Fall Winter wardrobe. I did manage to pull together something that would keep her warm this brisk 55 degree morning.

As for me, I excitedly threw on the Steve Madden Mryn boots I bought at Nordie's Anniversary sale. I dusted off my favorite pair of Forever 21 jeans and belted a Gap cascading cardigan. Welcome Fall!!

As I've mentioned before, I like fashion to be accessible. Quite often by the time I do outfit posts things are no longer available or hard to find. So today I'll be your personal shopper of sorts and post a few items that were recently acquired, giving you lovely readers a chance at items while they are still available.

{Forever 21 Julie Sweater Top $19.80}

One thing I can't wait to slip into this Fall is the chunky sweater. I picked up the Julie sweater that has a nice cowl neck. What I really like about this sweater, besides it's $20 price tag, is that it is chunky and slouchy without being sloppy or bulky. The horizontal knit also gives it interest. Vertical knits are so predicable. Pair this with tweed shorts, tights and boots. A Polyvore set would be helpful right about now, wouldn't it? Hmm. I'll work on that. One more thing, I recommend sizing up on this one.

The second item I picked up is the Black Hole necklace. The second I saw it on Ahn I needed it. She wears it oh so well. I love this necklace because it looks like a vintage find. Shh...don't tell anyone that it was under $9.

Allergy Free Granola Bites

I am always looking for allergy free recipes for the little princess. Anything that appeals to my own sweet tooth is always a plus. Cooking without eggs or dairy is always a challenge but I am determined to find yummy substitutes that the entire family can enjoy. One of the things that we miss out on are granola bars. I was on the hunt for something that travels well that I can keep in the car for a quick snack.

Thanks to Melissa at AnotherLunch.com for this granola receipe. I was able to use the recipe and make it allergy free. A treat free of egg, dairy, soy, nuts and wheat is a feat. These allergy free granola bites are easy to make and you can add all your favorite mix ins. This recipe turns out crunchy granola bites. I am still on the hunt for gooey granola bars, so if you have one pass it along.

Allergy Free Granola Bites

Ingredients:

2 1/2 C. quick oats
1/2 C. crisp rice cereal
1/2 C. Enjoy Life Allergy Free chocolate chips
1/3 C. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 C. canola oil
1/4 C. honey
1/2 tsp. vanilla
* optional: ground flax seed and/or wheat germ (I use 3 heaping Tbs. or so of each).

Mix all ingredients together, except chocolate chips. When ingredients are well combined add chocolate chips. Use a mini muffin pan. Spray each cup with non-stick pray. Spoon granola mixture into each cup pressing granola mixture into cup and level with the top of the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes until tops are golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool for 45 minutes. It is important to let the granola bites sit in the pan to cool.

If you to remove before the bites cool and set your granola will crumble and fall apart. You can use a regular muffin pan, just cook a little longer and let cool overnight.

More often than not, it isn't feasible to wear heels, wedges or anything over 2" when toting around a little rugrat. All of the outfits I post I actually wear, but in reality, sometimes there are shoe swaps. I do wear flip flops (gasp!) but I try to choose something other than rubber. There are so many more fashionable options out there. When the weather turns I will break out ballet flats.

Not always can I wear the shoes I want but I know the right flat (or glorified flip flop) can still pull together an outfit. Here I am in the same adorable outfit in a different shoe option. Today I wore the wedges all day (way too cute not to), but if it was going to be a very active day I would have gone with the flats. Not as chic but not completely sacrificing style.

Many women put everyone's needs before their own. Priorities definitely change when kids are involved. It took me over a year to get back into the swing of things. I finally had to do it for myself. Besides dressing for myself, I enjoy putting together outfits that inspire other women and moms. Not only do I want to be able to inspire, but I want the looks to be accessible and affordable. Who wouldn't love to have a limitless shopping budget? Oxymoron I know, but you know what I mean. Moving to what is technically the Midwest also limits my choices of where I can shop. I'm sure there are others that feel limited this way, but there is always the internet! Thank goodness for the internet or else I would have put up a big stink about relocating.

Lookbook (A day in the life)

We all know not everyday can be fabulous. Being a mother is not glamorous. In fact our daily lives are vicious cycles. The term "choosing your battles" has never been so true than trying to reason with a toddler. Today I am giving you readers a glimpse of a day in the life of the Couture and Crayons mom.

Make breakfast. Check. Little princess literally eats one bite of bacon. This is a daily battle. She wins.

Make bento lunch. Check. This lunch is so cute, I hope this encourages her to eat since she ate nothing for breakfast. Pray.

Get little princess dressed for preschool. Check. Get me dressed for the gym. Check. I hate the gym and briefly think about calling a friend for coffee. No I gotta go, because I just munched while preparing the bento lunch.

Preschool drop off. Oh crap, I forgot to tell Ms. Tricia that the princess should stay away from the sandbox because I don't want to deal with sand in the cast. Crap, crap, crap!

Gym time. Ah, thank goodness The Rachel Zoe Project is on, treadmill time will pass quickly with fashion as a distraction.

Quickly speed home to shower and eat. Spent too much time chatting with a gym acquaintance. Doesn't she know I'm on borrowed time?

Make an appointment for upholstery cleaning because that green washable marker really wasn't that washable. What? $120 to clean my sofa?! Tomorrow at 1pm will be fine.

Make a hair appointment for the little princess because I am tired of fighting with her hair. I have a chic bob in mind, tangle free please. The princess is going to my stylist because Super Cuts is also known as Butcher Cuts.

Preschool pick-up. Ms. Tricia says she didn't eat anything but a few bites. Lovely. I hope she makes up for lost calories at dinner.

Back home for a little breather. Little Princess has become a hoarder. She piles everything she owes on her new Dora couch (a get well gift) and on my marker stained couch. I find a box of fresh mushrooms she smuggled from my grocery bag from YESTERDAY! She may win the hoarding battle but I took back my mushrooms.

Time for a hair cut. Major meltdown. Hmm should I cancel? No, we are going! Big mistake. No breakfast and lunch has come to bite me in the ass. Meltdown in the salon. Gotta go, sorry for crying toddler in posh salon. Huge favor. Call me to reschedule? Perrtty please.

Trip to Mickey D's drive through per the princesses request. I'll do anything please eat!!

Preschool must have been rough because her eyes are getting heavy. It is 4pm, I'll just lay her down for a nap. She gave up naps two months ago, but she needs one today. I'll have to deal with a late bedtime later. I don't feel like dealing with a grouchy toddler now.

Hoarding continues in crib. Mini meltdown. She needs two baby dolls, specifically the one with the spotted cheeks and Coco. Oh and the carrier stuffed with Halloween napkins. Check.

Until you move away from a major metropolitan city like Los Angeles you don't realize all you took for granted in the way of diverse cultural offerings. In Los Angeles everything is at your finger tips, from Little Tokyo and Chinatown to Little Armenia.

Here in the Denver Metro there are a few marketplaces scattered around the city. Since I'm on this Bento kick I was excited to find out about a little Japanese market called Pacific Mercantile. I thought for sure that I would find a few supplies to help make those super cute lunches for the little princess. Sadly they did not have much in the way for Bento hobbyists.

I did have fun browsing the aisles. I adore the way the Japanese market and package products, everything looks so darn cute. I am not Japanese, but I did recognize a lot of the product and grocery items that they had available. There were also lots of Hawaiian ingredients and food items that are hard to find.

{I've been looking high and low for this Hawaiian sea salt.}

I bought a few things including Hawaiian Salt. If you have ever visited Hawaii, you've probably had the delicious Kalua pork at a Luau. You can recreate the same flavor of that underground Imu cooked pork in in a crock pot with Hawaiian salt. It is super easy. Recipe here.

I did pick up a small Bento box and package of cute molds. The molds are typically used for eggs, but I have plans for jello since the little darling is allergic to egg. Also in my loot, are Japanese rice crackers and rice seasoning. The rice seasoning is new to me, it was hard to choose since nothing was in English. It seems like these seasonings are a staple in Bento. Hopefully it will taste as good as it looks.

(And for you Islanders, I bought a bag of wet li hing mui and ate the whole bag on the way home. That made the trip totally worth it.)

Although not a place I'd frequent because of proximity, I am glad that such a place exists. If I ever have a sushi party I know just where to go.

Lookbook (Bold Stripes)

You know I love me some black and white stripe. I had to have this silk stripey number when I saw it at Urban Outfitters. They had just put it on the floor, but I wished I had the will power to hold off on the purchase because this top ended up hanging in my closet for at least a month. And guess what I spotted on the sale rack last week? You guessed it, this very top. Darn. Darn. Darn. I had the notion to return it and buy it at the sale price. Couldn't do it though. So here we are me and my stripe top.

The little princess is doing well and doesn't seem to mind that there is a cast up to her armpit. At least the scorching heat is over and I am at peace that she's not uncomfortable. The doctor made it clear that she should take it easy so that she doesn't fall and dislocate the broken bone or God forbid, fracture her other arm. So what would you think happened last night when I took her out for some fresh air? Yup, she took a digger and fell right onto her cast. Can someone please tell me where I can buy a bubble so I can put her in it?

We took the field trip that was abruptly postponed. So I'll be posting about the little Japanese market in Denver. Stay tuned.

Firsts

Yesterday started off wonderfully with a great first day of school. As parents we experience many great "firsts", first giggle, first steps, first birthday. Unfortunately, yesterday evening we ended up with our first broken arm. :::sob, sob:: This is the part I hate about parenthood. I wish her pain could be mine. She is fine now, but boy was it a rough 24 hours. I think I might have gone prematurely gray overnight. She is in great spirits, and at the very least got to choose a cool purple cast. Finally got her down for a much needed nap.

Parents beware of the evil jumpy castles. Grrr.

New Milestone

Today marks a new milestone as the little princess heads off the preschool. No tears were shed, it is just as if she already knew this was her new routine. What was a surprise on my part is my involvement in the process. I really never thought that I had to do anything besides drop her off. Ha! Surprise! Now I have to wear the hat of "involved parent." don't get me wrong I am all about being the involved parent, I was just not prepared for this now, at 2.5 years old.

For the first day of class she..eer...me...uh...WE had to bring a "Me" board to showcase all of the the princess' favorite things, pics of mom, dad, pets and friends. Hmm. Why didn't anyone tell me that this was the start of me going back to school? They need to teach these things in Parenting 101.

Not only did we already have a project due on the first day of class, I now have to make sure she has a lunch packed. The little rug rat has begged for those Luchables thing-a-mabobs. These things are packaged in cute little section containers with mini cheeses, meats, and crackers; just enough to feed a small mouse. (Oscar Meyer is making bank on these suckers.) But alas my kiddo has multiple food allergies and most convenience foods are out of the question. Enter the Bento Box craze. It was just an innocent search for some type of Tupperware that has cute little sections so I can make the little princess her very own Luchable. This was her lunch today.

And this is why I am so conflicted with being a SHAM and going back to work. I live to do little things like this. How could I do this if I had to go back to a full time job? Who am I kidding I would pack my own lunch like this too.

I am actually obsessed with this whole Bento Box culture. Field trip tomorrow! We are going to check out one of the few Japanese stores in Denver to see what I can find for my new Bento adventures. I am sick aren't I?

So today was an anomaly. Hubby is out of town and with the little munchkin's ever changing schedule, it somehow worked out that I had the day all to myself. :::sigh::: I wish I could say that I got a million things done, but really I did diddly squat. A couple of errands, then popped into Anthro to scope out possible open positions and a quickie stop at Nordstrom Rack where I picked up an adorable Trina Turk chanel-esque cardi. That's it. Now that's what Fridays should be like.

Splurge vs. Steal (JCrew Dapple Dot Cardi)

I picked up this cardigan months ago and I have been waiting for the weather to cool off to break it out. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day than today. Not sure what it is about Colorado, but it seems like people are a lot more chill and they actually stop to appreciate beautiful days.

When I bought this cardi, I knew that it had a JCrew vibe, but didn't realize it was a complete copy of the JCrew Dapple Dot cardigan. It is missing the little sparklies from the tabs in the front and the dots are just dots not "dapple dots" but they share the same silhouette. If you feel like a treasure hunt, there may be one or two of these still hanging around. I saw one just last week when I went on my ranting rampage here.

Seven Year Itch

Hubby and I celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary this past Monday. We married in hubby's home state of Pennsylvania, but I had always longed for a wedding on the beach. A couple years after we were married we vacationed in Maui and I wanted to capture this time in our lives where we were care free and young so 40 years down the road we can reminisce. Even looking back at these pictures just five years ago seems like a lifetime has passed.

One of my dearest friends jokingly asked if I had the seven year itch. Maybe just a little itch, but not about the marriage. Now that our lives have evolved to this family unit, my only longing is pursuing a different career path. My passion has always been fashion and design, but the coercion of family and my practical side nudged me toward a career in finance. Now that my life has been put on pause on the career front, I feel more inclined to pursue something in line with my passion with fashion and design. I have been daydreaming about visual merchandising. How fabulous would it be to be a visual stylist for Nordstrom or a display coordinator for Anthropologie? It is really a pie in the sky dream, but I feel it calling. I've dabbled in many artistic pursuits like photography and event design. I've worked on various events with the famous Mark's Garden, i.e. Tori Spelling's first wedding. Yes it was crazy over the top and the Manor is equally as crazy and over the top, but I loved every moment of it. With design stints here and there it still makes me low man on the totem pole compared to kids today with degrees in visual merchandising. Back in the day this type of job was not as popular it is today. In order to break into this type of career it means that I have to work on the retail side to get my foot in the door. If only I would have pursued my original goal as an interior designer. So there you have it. My seven year itch. Should I itch it?

Ranting about...

I'm a little peeved with myself because I managed to lose 2 pairs of sunglasses in less than 2 weeks. Somebody in Colorado is walking around with a kick ass pair of YSL Sunglasses. Argh. And just yesterday after complaining to hubby about the lost sunglasses I lose my favorite cat eye sunglasses a few hours later. Grr.

What else am I ranting about? Finding something on super sale that I paid retail for. American Eagle is one of my dark horses when it comes to shopping because it fits petite frames so well. While at Marshalls I noticed that they had a ton of American Eagle items. I thought, hmpf, new vendor this could be good. Then I found two things I bought last year at almost full price. Argh. Grr. Grumble.

Ok. Now that they are side by side I am seeing what you are probably thinking. These two items look pretty much the same. I promise they are so different. If you missed out on either of these last year, hit up Marshalls or even try their sister store TJ Maxx. The Sergeant Pepper Jacket is $20 and the Military Sweater Jacket is $16. The military trend has come back with a full vengeance so scour the racks for these babies.

I love this belt so much that I wore it two days in a row. It seems to go with everything and even with a gray moment, it pairs perfectly with the ever popular J Crew Ocelot cardigan. The outfit looks to be channeling a modern day Peg Bundy. If only I could have her daily routine of soaps, bon bons, no cooking and no cleaning. And if I actually did have that routine I could wear those platform mary janes all day and shimmy around like Peggy. In reality, I had to slip into some JCrew studded sandals to go about my day.

My Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock Benny bag was featured on Gilt yesterday for a great price. One thing that peeves me about Gilt is that they never post pictures of handbags with a model. I like a frame of reference for sizing. They only show the bag with a fake hand. Annoying, especially when the bag is a final sale. I told you all that I was on a mission to sport white before Labor Day arrives. The weather has been so gorgeous and tonight we headed out to listen to live music, then dinner at a friend's. A maxi dress was the perfect option. It is not often that I can find a maxi dress that I don't have to hem or wear with high high wedges. On the contrary, the dress could have been a tad bit longer, but I like that I can wear flats with it. So easy and comfy, I don't know why I haven't worn it all summer.

Summer is swiftly coming to a close. Mornings are becoming brisk and this makes for perfect weather to wear just about anything. Even though they say that white trousers after Labor Day is no longer faux pas, I still feel hesitation to break them out. So I am incorporating as much white into my ensembles for the next couple weeks. The off the shoulder crochet sweater takes me back the days of Flashdance.

If I'm not rockin' a statement necklace I will usually play it up with stacks and stacks of bangles, large earrings and an even larger ring. The mondo ring is from ASOS, a UK site that I have been stalking. Buy it HERE. I bought a size small and I ususally wear a size 6 ring. ASOS is offering free shipping both ways until 8/31/10 which is tremendous because shipping from the UK costs an arm and a leg. They have a ton of cute items, but I did find much else that I couldn't live without. I love being able to shop overseas. Even though trends are similar some of their interpretations are a little more progressive. Check them out, they have a lot of items that are really affordable.

Buzzing About (Mulberry for Target)

Target is at it again with collaborations with high end designers. Fashionistas are anticipating the collection from the Mulberry brand. We all know and lust the Alexa satchel, which retails for $1200, named after Alexa Chung herself. Aren't we all hoping to get our hands on a more affordable version? The collection us due in stores in October 10, but through Gilt can get your hands on one earlier than the store's release date. So instead of making a mad dash to the nearest Target store we have to wait with bated breath for the clock to strike 12 noon ET on August 20th. A sneak peak shows one of eight bags Mulberry has designed for the capsule collection. Here is what Mulberry is saying about their collaboration with Target:

"The range comprises of eight handbag styles and aims to evoke our brand spirit, rather than a compromise on quality. The key to the collection is authenticity communicating our brand character, personality and finally our brand philosophies. Using fabrics such as denim and velvet have allowed us be playful and innovative, and at the same time remain true to our beliefs, whilst also maintaining an accessible price point."

Target has been tight lipped on the designs. But we get a little glimpse of what's to come with the bags pictured above. A mix of patent with denim and velvet. I'll just say that I'm not a fan of the heart adornments. Guess we'll have to wait until August 20th to see the entire line up.

Things have to get worse before they get better. We were up in the wee hours of the night tending to our little one, but I think she is on the mend because she has been driving me bonkers all day today.

A few days quarantined to the house and we all are going a little stir crazy. I had to put on a little make up yesterday because I was horrified at the reflection in the mirror. You would have thought that I was the one who was sick. I had nowhere to go, but I just needed to do it for my own sanity.

Just a super casual day today with just a quick trip to the grocery store and a few errands. The look of the day was taken in my master bedroom because my usual backdrop (family room) is being used as temporary triage. Cross my fingers that we'll be back to normal tomorrow. Let the chaos commence.

Calling in Sick

The little princess has been under the weather and when this happens life is put on pause. Sleepless nights and hours of cartoons is pretty much all the action going on over here. The best part about it is that I get lots of cuddle time. Princess is not much of a cuddle bug, she's always on the go and can't sit still for a moment. So I know when she is coming down with something when she wants to be held.

So readers I am officially calling in sick and hopefully be back with lots of cute outfit posts this week.

Saturday nights tend to be a very mellow night for us anyway. Tonight, if I can stay awake, I'll be watching the movie Coco Before Chanel. I am thoroughly fascinated by Coco and the life she led. Different aspects of her life influenced the 2.55 Classic Flap bag. The chain strap is said to be reminiscent of her days in an orphanage where the caretakers dangled keys from chains around their waists. The famous double quilting was influenced by her love of horse racing and the quilted coats worn by the boys at the track. And it is said that the secret pocket behind the flap is where she used to hid her love letters. Let's hope this rendition of her fascinating life can keep me awake to the end.

It seems I have been lacking in the lookbook posts lately. So here is one for ya. Today's look is built around two key pieces from Urban Outfitters. You wouldn't really think of Urban Outfitters as a place for classic pieces. The over sized henley tunic is a perfect piece for the fall wardrobe. Tuck it in for a more conservative look or wear it untucked over a pair of leggings and a great boot. The shorts are ultra comfy, drapey and relaxed. (Check your store they are on sale.) You wouldn't think to pair two pieces that are a bit over sized, but to keep from looking too frumpy tuck in the shirt and belt the shorts.

When your ensemble consists of basics, you gotta spice it up. How about an over sized bracelet? I think there's a theme here, OVER SIZED. The large and in charge bracelet is by Noir. They make some fabulous over the top pieces. For this classic bracelet they just dialed up the size. Watch out for Noir on the online sample sale sites. They make their rounds on Gilt and you can pick up some unique pieces for great prices. I missed the pyramid stack rings the first few times, but the last time Gilt hosted Noir there were plenty left.

At It Again (Shellac Fedora)

Two weeks of the Shellac Romantique, I was dying to change my nail color. After I updated you guys on the 14th day here, I only had enough time to trim my nails. Even after trimming my nails the Shellac did not chip. Ahmazing! I finally got the chance to soak and remove the light pink hue to give Fedora a try. It is still a little early for this dark of a color, but I was itching to see the color on. The lightest of pink and the darkest plum are my staples in nail color. Since the Shellac colors are limited it was natural to reach for my go to colors.

I need to switch on some lights because this was a horrible paint job. Another reason to keep with the nude pink. We'll see how the darker color fares in this go around.

I hate when I over do it at the gym, it almost ruins it for the rest of the week. I am so sore that it hurts to breath. I've been trying to be consistent but with the end of summer nearing it makes me want to ditch the gym. But really the gym is a time where I can escape. As long as I have a couple fashion and celeb gossip mags I can distract myself from the torture that is an hour on the treadmill. I've gotten pretty good at reading and running. Just a couple of mishaps when I drop my ipod and the treadmill launches it into the person behind me. I must say the best part actually is people watching. The things people do to reach target muscle groups.

I don't own a scale, I consider myself to have somewhat of an athletic build (or I'd like to think so.) Ha! I judge my "weight" by the fit of my clothes. Putting on old favorites I can immediately tell if I need to lay off of the fistfuls of M&Ms I indulge in while watching the Real Housewives.

You may remember this skirt. An oldie but goodie from Target. It is a high waist skirt and even though it is roomy in the hip area the waist is fitted. I shimmied into the skirt with no problem this morning, but by the evening I couldn't wait to take it off. Maybe it was the two tacos for lunch that did me in. Nah just water retention. Yeah, yeah that's it. At least the necklace still fits.

Just a brief follow up to my original CND Shellac review I posted about here. What can I say? I am thoroughly impressed. Day 14 and not even a single chip. I am very hard on my hands and was pretty sure that I would sustain some kind of "chipage."

You will notice that nail growth is visible, so keep this in mind when deciding on colors. Honestly I was tired of the color by day 10. The other thing is that the color at the finger tips does start to wear down, again if this was a brighter or darker color this would be much more noticeable.

What about the shine? For the most part is still looks like a fresh top coat. Unbelievable right? I am true believer in CND Shellac. I will still tool around with regular nail polish for fun colors of the moment, but Shellac will be my holy grail. I hear that more colors are arriving for fall. Can't wait! But for now, I'm going to try out Fedora, a dark auburn. Pictures to come in a future post.

I realize I never really gave you dear readers any formal intro. So here is just a little tidbit about me, more specifically about dear hubby. He is from a tiny town in central Pennsylvania. His parents live in a beautiful historical house on acres of land and have Amish as neighbors. So I was pretty shocked when I saw the latest photos taken by The Satorialist. The location of where the photos were taken is just a stones throw away from where the in-law's live, right down the road in fact.

In reading some of the comments, it seems that many were not familiar with the Amish culture. First let me say that this little girl and the family that was photographed by The Satorialist is mostly likely of the Mennonite sect. Amish do not pose for photographs, nor would they wear any type of pattern. Amish clothing is very simple and limited to the colors of black, blue and white. Mennonites are a little more "worldly" or progressive.

As you know Amish live a very simple lifestyle. Generally, they avoid the use of modern technologies, such as electricity. They do not think of technology as evil or sin, but regard it as vanity. Each sect differs in what technologies are acceptable (ie 12-volt batteries and gas powered farm equipment.) It is just so awesome to me to see people living such a primitive lifestyle. I never tire of seeing horse an buggy travel on the main road. My in-laws live on Route 45 and as you travel down this main road you know which homes belong to the Amish. During the day you see the plain clothes hanging out to dry and at nights the windows are aglow with a blue tint cast from their lanterns.

Yes, people still live like this. These people are not living in poverty, just living life in simplicity an not in vanity. These people are not blind to the technology cropping up around them, they manage to find ways around the "system." A few examples; the Amish are not allowed to drive, but they do pay for rides to the city. The women clean homes for work and are allowed to use the vacuum cleaner and other modern conveniences. I joke to my sister-in-law that her Amish house keeper probably catches up on her soaps when she cleans. LOL! Other little known facts are that they are exempt from paying some federal and state tax and they do not have health insurance as they believe in self-sufficiency and communal help. There is so much more. Fascinating I tell you.

In my many years of visiting, I am still fascinated with the Amish culture. Actually during my visits, the Amish stare at me as much as I stare at them. Can you imagine a sight like me in their neck of the woods? An anomaly.

Central PA is truly is beautiful country and the heart of America. This is the very reason why hubby and I were married right on his parents' farm seven years ago this month. We were married in front of their old spring house. Water used to flow through this spring house and it used to be a place to store perishables because the water flow kept the little space cool. A lot of history in the small town they call home.

I'll leave you with a few pictures of a time that was simpler for us as well. Just hubby, me and our dreams.

I am absolutely smitten with this lace top. There is just something about lace that makes me feel so feminine. There is a fine line with lace though, it can go one of two ways trashy or classy. This top is just so delicate, classy for sure. Guess what? It is from Charlotte Russe! $20 bucks! Buy it here. Lace is a big fall trend and definitely something that can carry you from season to season. This top is actually a steal compared to the splurge worthy Joie Evie top priced at $198.

One thing about lace is that is screams dressy. What better way to tone down dressy lace than to pair it with distressed denim. When the little princess saw these shorts she said to me "Mama someone chewed your shorts." Aw, out of the mouths' of babes. One of the many perks of parenthood.

As with stripes, lace is a perfect medium to showcase a dramatic necklace. Something about a consistent pattern that makes this work. Remember that great turquoise necklace from JcPenny's I wore here? I also found this fantastic ivory necklace from the same brand, Mixit. This jewelry line is my dark horse in statement jewelry. And the great thing is that "Penny's" always has promotions and coupons, which makes this already affordable line a steal.

Mini English Garden

My front yard is a work in progress of what I would like to be an English garden. I have been lazy this year, not pruning or weeding. Previous years' hard work has paid off because everything came back pretty hearty. I usually have cut roses in the house, but this summer has been brutal. Hail and wind ruined any decent blooms worth cutting.

I decided to bring a small piece of my garden indoors. In the corner nook of my kitchen, where two windows meet to host a view of the back yard, I have a mini English garden. It is in this nook where I have a tray that holds a small lavender bush and pot of fresh basil atop an antique scale. There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh lavender to make a mundane chore, like washing dishes, a pleasant experience...aromatherapy.

Late nights are catching up with me. I am a total night owl, often not even thinking about turning in until 1:30am. This is the time that I answer to no one. I can do what ever I want, watch trashy reality t.v., surf the internet, catch up on work or all three. I'm very talented and can multi-task like that. The bummer is that the little princess doesn't really care how late I go to bed. Once she is up, it's showtime no matter how tired I may be.

Never too tired for fashion, I managed to get it together for a lookbook for you readers. (If this post makes absolutely no sense, just look at the pretty pictures.) I usually chose a single article and build my outfit from there. Today's item is a pair of Jessica Simpson pumps. I'll admit it, I used to be a hater. I never thought I'd own a pair of Jessica Simpson shoes. But I gotta hand it to ~~Jess~~ her designers, the footwear line offers some stylish yet comfortable shoes. I've seen some ridiculously high platforms in the Jessica Simpson footwear line and they all seem to have ample cushioning. Jess must be doing something right, reportedly her various lines (shoes, handbags, swimwear, lingerie and luggage) have brought in $500 million in revenue. Now she is expanding her empire and introducing a denim line. I pray to God that she leaves her name and any bedazzling off the back pockets.

Random Find (Quik Top)

Ok. Just a little bit of randomness. As a mother, I find joy in discovering things that could make my life easier or just a wee bit better.

I am the worse offender when I comes to opening a can of pop and only consuming half the beverage. I don't know why I even bother putting the half full can in the fridge, the fizz is gone by the time I want to finish the can. Money down the drain literally.

I feel like Goldilocks trying to find a can of soda that is just right. The mini cans are oh so cute, but way too small. Maybe it is a psychological thing, but I feel like there are only two sips in that half can. The liters are way too big. The liter will fizzle out before I get half way through the bottle.

Enter the Quik Top. It is a little thingamabob that pops on the top of the can. The lid twists on/off and keeps your beverage fizzy. I've left a can of soda over night and the next day and my drink is still bubbly. Yay! Day two is stretching it a little though. I wouldn't recommend going past day two or you run the risk of gulping down flat soda. Yuck!

If I just want a few sips to wet the whistle, I don't have to feel guilty about being wasteful. Try it! Quik Top keeps your soda fresh and fizzy.

Splurge vs. Steal (J Brand Houlihan)

The J Brand Houlihan has been on the "I gotta have it list" of many. The insanely popular cargo skinny has been seen on many a celebrity, including Rihanna, Hillary Duff and Jessica Alba. And for good reason, because it seems to flatter various body types. Since the end of January, J Brand has sold an astounding 75,000 pairs and another 40,000+ pairs on back order. The retail price of $230 does not seem to affect the demand for this military jean named after Hot Lips Houlihan from the television series M*A*S*H.

I did not even dare to try these babies on when I noticed that my Nordstrom had them in stock for fear that I would fall in love with them. With the demand of the Houlihan I can safely assume that we will never see them on sale.

In love with the style, I set out to find a cheaper chic version. Nordstrom has a decent copy cat version in the Sanctuary 'Peace' Skinny Leg Cargo for $78 during their anniversary sale, normally $118. But I happened upon a copy of Sanctuary's houlihan copy at Nordstrom Rack. For those of you who may not know, Nordstrom Rack has clothing especially made for the Rack in addition to selling items shipped directly from their stores.

Many brands have cheaper offshoots and these less expensive lines will use the same pattern, but will use a less expensive fabric or lose an embellishment or two to cut on costs. Sanctuary Surplus is an off shoot of the Sanctuary Brand. The cargo skinnies by Sanctuary Surplus were pretty much identical to their 'Peace' Skinny Leg Cargo. Missing was the cargo pocket on the left thigh and the belt. For $39 who needs an extra pocket that goes unused and a belt that will probably be toss to the back of the closet. I would love to own a pair of the J Brand Houlihans, but I just can't justify that kind of money for such a trendy jean or any jean for that matter.

Lacquered Up (CND Shellac)

Living in Los Angeles you can find nail salons on virtually every corner. The overabundance of nail services has salons fiercely competing for business. Mani's and pedi's for under $20, I was spoiled. Every other week I had a standing appointment at my local spot. Ahhh those were the days.

Imagine my shock upon arriving to the Denver suburbs to find that a pedicure alone runs about $25. Add manicure and tip, I walk out the door about $40 lighter. In no way shape or form can I give up my pedi's. Can't do it. So I sucked it up and learned how to give myself a darn good manicure.

But nothing is more annoying than chipping nail polish and having to redo them every week. Enter CND Shellac manicure. I looked into having this done, but the salons around here were charging $50 for the service. For that price, I calculated and figured I can buy everything I need and make up for it in two applications.

Shellac is a hybrid nail polish that is touted as the 14 day manicure. It is a gel based polish that is cured under a UV lamp. Unlike other gel formulas, like OPI's Axxium, CND's formula is easier to remove. The Shellac process includes 1 base coat, 2 coats of color and 1 top coat. In between each coat the hands are placed under a UV lamp to cure. After application your nails are dry and good to go. No fear of nicking or denting. Not only that, but the polish is chip free for two weeks. No damage to your own nail either. You just have to commit to the color for 2+ weeks.

I stumbled upon the Shellac system locally and ordered the lamp via ebay from Asia. The little bottles are not cheap at $15.95 a pop, but it yields about 35 applications. CND is also pushing their UV lamp at a hefty price of $200. They've done a great job marketing the lamp as it is sold out and on back order. CND warns that the polish may not cure correctly if any other lamp is used. I found a suitable one for $26.

The system is recommended to be used by professionals. Blah. Blah. Blah. Truth be told, it did take me about two tries to figure out. My only misstep was not leaving my hands under the lamp long enough. After each super thin coat, I cured it under the lamp for 3-4 minutes. It was easier to complete one hand at a time. After the last application and cure, a sticky tacky film is removed with 99% alcohol. To remove the sticky residue I used only what I had on hand, which was the alcohol at the drugstore percentage (70%). This worked fine in removing the sticky film. This sticky film is just the residue left over from the curing process, it is not a sign that the application did not cure. When applied and cured correctly, the application is dry immediately after the final coat and cure. If nails still feel wet and marks are evident to the touch, the application did not cure correctly.

For removal, I soaked my nails in nail polish remover for a few minutes and used a metal cuticle pusher to help peel off the nail polish. Easy.

There has been a run on this entire line by CND, but if you are just looking for a more affordable lamp this is the one I bought. It is 36 watts. If you with go a higher wattage the curing time will be shorter. Total wattage is calculated by the wattage of the bulb multiplied by the number of bulbs. (ie 9watts x 4 bulbs= 36 watts). My lamp took two weeks to get to me, but it was worth the savings.

TIP: If you find that the polish is not curing, you need to be under the lamp longer in between coats. It also helps to ensure that your coats are super thin.

This stuff wears like nail polish and is not thick and hard like acrylics. Nail growth will be noticeable towards the end of 14 days.

The picture above is Day 1. I will update with a post on day 14. I choose a very neutral color, romantique, which better hides nail growth. The other color I chose, Fedora, is more like a dark plum and not as suitable for the summer. When my two weeks are done. I'll update when I switch over to that color. Thumbs up for Shellac!

Christmas in July

There is a little bit of a buzz going around with a few mass retailers including Target doing a Christmas in July sale. These retailers are trying to entice buyers with special deals on select items.

I'm not sure about this marketing tactic. Christmas is the last thing on my mind mid July. I'd say Nordie's is on the right track with marketing it as an exclusive event vs. an early Christmas sales event. If I can mentally get there, it's not a bad idea to do some very early Christmas shopping out of the way for the little rug rat.

It took me about a year and a half to get my grove back after having baby. That first year was all about baby and I didn't put much thought about what I wore day to day. I knew I needed to do something about my wardrobe and didn't want to spend a lot. It had been a few years since the last time I stepped foot in a Forever 21, but remembered that everything was so affordable. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised that I found things that were not skin tight. Back in the day their size small could fit a petite 10 year old. Hmm...maybe that is just the stuff that I shopped for during my clubbing days. Scandalous.

One of the first purchases back from my Forever 21 hiatus was this bohemian top. It was perfect for what I was looking for, hiding the little pooch that was once my flat tummy. Ladies, we have two things working against us, 1. child bearing and 2. age. When the two happen simultaneously we have to do things we never had to do before, like work out and watch what we eat. Boo. Hiss. Ack!

I had my heart set on this top and the only size left was a large. If you are going to go a size or two bigger on a shirt a bohemian style top is the one to do it with. In fact, the bigger the better. I did try to shrink this top though. I was shocked that this little sucker survived the hot water cycle in the washer and the shrink cycle in the dryer. (In case you didn't know, we petites have a special built in shrink cycle aka dry on high for 5 hours. Now if I can just find one with a hem cycle.) Not sure if the shirt actually shrunk because the it is still on the billowy side. I must say Forever 21 has come a long way. Ten years ago if I spilled hot tea on a top and let it air dry, a 3 year old could fit into it.

Here I am one year later and I managed to scrounge up what ever was left of the old me while trying to navigate my way through my new normal. You can say it was a bohemian revival or graduating into motherhood.

It has been so hot! There is a fine line between hot and sweltering. And it has been sweltering for the last couple of days. Thank goodness for skirts and airy tops.

From relationships to fashion the saying is true, opposites attract. Pairing an ultra feminine top and skirt with an edgy belt works so well together. Does the belt look familiar? I'll give you a hint, Sex And The City The Movie.

It's a copy cat version of Carrie's belt that was famously paired with multiple memorable ensembles, from a green floral frock to a lovely fur accented coat. When SATC The Movie came out everyone lusted Carrie's belt. It was on every fashionista's wish list along with the Dior Extreme Gladiator Platforms, but the belt was a more attainable piece because of all the copy cat versions on the market. The belt Carrie wore was vintage, but SATC stylist, Pat Field was ahead of the game and produced her own reproduction. Believe it or not, the belt was purchased from QVC. I don't consider myself part of QVC or HSN's target audience, but as a no holds barred shopper when QVC or HSN collaborates with the likes of Pat Field or Rachel Zoe, I'm not ashamed to tune in at 1am to see what's at risk of selling out in 30 seconds.

This was a hot selling belt. I didn't act fast enough so I was stuck with ordering a size large. Clothing surgery (very common here at Couture and Crayons) had to be performed to get this belt to fit my waist. It worked out for the better since I added my own snaps it is adjustable. I've worn it with dresses high on the waist and over a shearling coat. A very versatile piece. This reminds me, I'll have to see what Tori Spelling is up to with her line at HSN...

{Sketchers 'Twinkle Toes'}

Never send me in a store to pick up ONE thing. It just will not happen. All summer the little princess has been living in Keen's and I thought I'd pick up another pair during the sale. I've learned the hard way that you can't skimp on kid's shoes. The little princess already has had her fair share of blisters from cheapo Target shoes. I figure she'll pay her dues when she grows up and squeezes her size 6 feet into the most adorable 4" stilettos a half size too small. (Yes, I am totally guilty.) The Anniversary Sale had a great price on the normally $50 kid shoe. Newsflash for those of you who don't have kids yet, they are expensive. Two hours into the sale the shoes were already sold out of her size, I should have pre-ordered. I ended up getting two sizes larger. Hopefully these will last at least a year with all that room to grow. All Nordstrom associates are trained well and normal protocol is to bring at least one pair of shoes that you didn't ask for. Sure enough I took the bait. As parents, we want to give our kids things we didn't have. Secretly I want to run around in shoes that light up. I couldn't resist getting these 'Twinkle Toes' Sketchers that are neon pink with obnoxiously bright LED lights that light up when she walks. She LOVES and I'm jealous!

{Anniversary sale goodies}

I couldn't help myself and wandered from department to department. I found a great pair of boots that I over looked during pre-sale, a Chanel-esque cardi from the BP department and a leopard pencil skirt. Everyone should have at least one animal print piece in their closet. The skirt didn't look "all that" in the catalog, in real life it is a great brocade fabric and has little silver metallic flecks in the fabric that gives it a little somethin' somethin'. It runs a bit large and the entire company sold out of the petite sizes in the first few hours of opening. I am hoping that they will restock so that I can get the petite 0. They have a great return/exchange policy, so I am keeping the 0 waiting patiently even if it takes a month or so to get the petite size. Things in store and online were selling through fast. I have a feeling it will be a nightmare this weekend. If you plan on hitting the sale go early.

I usually try to keep this blog fun and light as life can be hectic. My heart is heavy because I just found out that the sweetest man who is my postal carrier, Babou, lost his 3 year old daughter last Friday. Little Isatou Ceesay drowned in the hot tub of their apartment complex.

I am just so saddened by this news that it brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it. Becoming a mother has taught me a lot, but most importantly it has given me the opportunity to experience loving someone else more than I love myself. I can't image the devastation of losing a child.

Please keep the Ceesay family in your thoughts and prayers.

**Update**A website has been set up for the family. Donations are being accepted to help buy plane tickets for Babou's mother and brother in Africa. There is also a meal sign up and a sign up for other household help. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Coming Clean (Digital Perm)

I am here to come clean and let you all know that I went and got a digital perm. I have been obsessed with this ever since my friend from Asia came to visit and had a head of hair with the most perfect curls. I come to find that there is some newish technology with perms. Apparently this type of process is more common in Asian salons. Yes, I am Asian and I live under a rock...the Rocky Mountains that is, not very many Asian salons around here.

There are lots of inquiries about digital perms so this is going to be lengthy. If you are not that interested in the details skip down to see pics below.

This technology is also known as the digital perm, digi perm,warm perm or hot perm because the hot rods that are used are digitally regulated. The end result is much different than the traditional cold perm. See Wikipedia for a more thorough explanation of a digital perm here.

My M.O. was to wait until my next visit to L.A. to get a digital perm where Asian salons are in abundance, but I stumbled upon an Asian salon just 15 minutes away from my house. Didn't I just say that these were scarce in Colorado? I probably walked by this salon at least 100 times in the four years that I've lived here. After walking past for the 101st time, a light bulb went off and I inquired about a digital perm. By golly they did them.

The place was not the posh salon settings that I am used to. It was more of a drop-in kind of place. I believe it was owner who attended to me and she did not have the greatest "chair side" manner. No chit chatting. In fact when I asked if she did many digital perms her reply was "no we don't do many anymore, everyone wants straight hair." Oye....and I still went through with it. She was not kind to my mane. There was lots of tugging, pulling and fighting with my hair. She gave me a little trim before she started on the perm. My hair was wet going into the process and I think this may have hampered some of her efforts. The outcome was more of a beachy wave than ringlet curls. Phew. My ultimate fear was coming out looking like a doll with tight ringlets. But from what I've seen in my research on the web, I expected to see more of a tighter curl than waves.

My friend just got her's done today in L.A. and she ended up with tighter curls. Comparing processes, her stylist dried her hair before the perm process. I think that was the main difference. My solution probably ended up being watered down and therefore did not set the same way.

I've read that after getting digital perms, styling curls and waves are much easier and they stay ALL day. My objective with the digital perm was stay all day curls and waves. I can safely say this was achieved. Prior to the digital perm, curls would fall out by day's end. Now, although I still spend the same amount of time styling the difference is that the curl stays all day.

All in all, I am fine with the outcome. After seeing my friends hair though, I am not completely satisfied. I still want more of a tighter curl. My version is a good intro to the digital perm, I think I would have freaked if I walked out looking like Annie. So the next time I'm in L.A. I have plans for another digital perm.

You are probably wondering about the details. I paid $125 for a trim, a (semi) digital perm and hair abuse. I don't think I'll be revisiting that salon, I am in L.A. enough to get a proper digital perm. My friend went to Hair Epoch in Los Angeles and had wonderful results with Aki. Her cut and digital perm cost $170ish. They have good reviews on Yelp. Both of our cuts and digital perms took 3-4 hours. Bring a book.

On to the picture and styling portion. It has been exactly a week and I am learning to live with this new texture in my hair and trying out different techniques in styling it. This first pic is pretty much what it looks like in its natural state. The technique here is simple. Spray hair with Fredrick Fekkai Luscious Curls then twirl sections of hair and let it air dry. It gives me soft beach waves.

In the pic below I created more prominent waves with a 1.25" curling iron. Tutorial here from Cupcakes and Cashmere. After curling I followed with the Fekkai Luscious Curls Spray.

It really doesn't look much different than what I had going on, the style just stays ALL DAY. So good! I still have yet to take the flat iron to it, blow it out or curl it into ringlets. So more hair pics to come!

Now that the in-laws have left we need to get things back on track. The house really needs a thorough cleaning and I need to get my weekly menu going, but I thought I'd check in since I've been scarce for the past week.

I behaved myself during July 4th sales and kept out of the stores. Online browsing proved to be more tempting since I can do it 24/7 in the comfort of my own home. I had my eyes on a pair of KORS by Michael Kors gladiator wedges and they were calling my name when Bloomingdale's decided to put them on sale. Buy them here. They arrived last week and I couldn't be happier! (I did wear them in my last lookbook and didn't make mention of them.) The ultra feminine dress by Patterson J. Kincaid is now on sale here for $55. FYI, the cut of the dress has a bohemian flare so it is really loose at the top and will require a tank underneath.

Did you also happen to notice my new rug? =) Nothing really to write home about, it's just a $50 rug from Costco. It does give me a little pep in my step to have something new and different to look at. Yay for anything new for the home! The simple things, right?

Well I better stop procrastinating, I have lots of catching up to do to get this household back on track.

Tag Sale

I live to shop, but garage sales are not my scene. (My mother-in-law often refers to garage sales as tag sales, this cracks me up.) Many moms swear by these tag sales as a great place to get toys for the kids on the cheap. As fast as children grow out of clothes, they grow out of toys even faster. This weekend while out and about running errands I spot an "Estate Sale" sign. Sounding more glamorous than a garage sale, I decided to go check it out. This estate sale is what I equate to the ideal tag sale. The entire contents of the house was for sale. And lookie look at what I scored at the tag sale for $35. It immediately reminded me of the Pottery Barn Briana Glass lamp. Now I just need to find a shade for this great over sized lamp base.

Better luck next time on toys for the little one.

Sorry for being M.I.A. With the in-laws in town we are tour guides for the time being. You know how it is. You yourself would never hop in the car to see the local attractions, but when company is in town you pull out all the stops and take them to everything your state is know for. Exhausting. Much of what Colorado is know for are the great outdoors. Outdoor wear, not cute. At least not what I have. A mish mosh of whatever will keep me warm and things I don't care if it I happen to fall in a mud pit.

I need to do some last minute prep for a rockin' 80's party tomorrow night. I still need to hit the local thrift store to see if I can find some finishing touches for hubby's attire. Perhaps a fanny pack or a pair of Crazee Wear harem work out pants. Does anyone remember those? Scary thing is hubby used to wear them and his mom still has them back home. Wish me luck, I really hope I can find both fanny pack and pants. LOL! I have been chuckling about the possibilities of his get up for tomorrow evening.

What I'm wearing today is centered around a statement necklace. I love turquoise, but I don't love it enough to spend on the real deal. On our recent visit to Estes Park with the in-laws, many of the shops had fabulous statement turquoise pieces. Some of these pieces were thousands of dollars. My cheap chic version is from JcPenny's. Did I tell you that I can shop anywhere? Yeah, I just might have to lock myself up in my own home. Get the exact necklace here, and maybe even cheaper in store. And just a quick mention of these skinnies by Mossimo for $5. Love good finds in the clearance section of Target.

P.S. You might notice that the rug is missing. The doggies were bad while were gone on an all day tour. The family room needs a little update anyway. Any tips on where to get an inexpensive rug?

Lookbook (July 4th)

The ~~outlaws~~ in-laws are in town for a visit over the July 4th holiday. This independence day I was in a festive mood and turn it out in red, white and blue. I can't say how many compliments I got on this skirt today. Here is the exact skirt online, hard to find in store. (Who am I kidding anything is hard to find in F21.)

With my covered dish in hand we headed to a BBQ potluck. I brought my infamous Crack Dip, also know as Buffalo Chicken Dip. This is typically not my fare, I usually do something a little more...umm....refined. I need to consult with the Barefoot Contessa on this one. I know she can turn this dip into something elegant that would be a little more suitable for dinner parties. The original recipe calls for canned chicken. Eew. I can't bear to make anything with canned chicken, so this adaptation with rotisserie chicken was a little more palatable. It is a sloppy dip, but pretty easy to prepare. As usual it is was the hit of the party, not a bite left at the end of the night. Next time you host a ball game for the guys, this is the dip to make; you'll be famous.

Buffalo Chicken Dip
Adapted from Frank’s Red Hot Sauce

1 rotisserie chicken, meat shredded with a fork
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup blue cheese salad dressing (omit and use 1/2 cup ranch dressing total, if you prefer)
1/4 cup ranch salad dressing
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (substitute shredded mozzarella if you prefer)
1/2 cup Frank’s Red Hot sauce (any hot sauce will do)

Mix together all ingredients until well combined. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Serve with crackers, chips, or sliced bread.

Review (Goody Volume Boost)

Success with the Goody Spin Pin (review & tutorial here) gave me the inkling to give another one of their Simple Styles products a try. Two words. NO BUENO.

Here is the way it is supposed to work. You lift a front section of your hair, stick the comb (teeth facing out) and lay the section back over the comb and viola instant volume! Er...not so much. There are two problems with this volume boost comb. First, the comb slides down the back of the head. Even teasing the hair didn't help the comb stay in place, it just found its way to the back of my head. Who wants volume back there? Not I. Second problem. Dare I say it? Even if this comb did work, it is not high enough. Now I'm not looking to look like Snookie, but I can achieve the same poof height on my own without any type of contraption on my head.

Even though this is somewhat of an improvement upon the Bumpit, the Goody Volume Boost still lacks in the volume department and most importantly it is not discrete enough to wear out in public. Save your self the $6 for a top from Forever 21 because the Goody Volume Boost is a pass.

Where was Forever 21 maternity 3 years ago when I had a bun in the oven? I only bought a handful of maternity clothes during my pregnancy. I was lucky that empire tops were all the rage. I got away with buying larger sizes and lived in yoga pants. I refused to pay for overpriced tents. The ninth month I think I went into hiding. Fashion was not my top priority. Comfort was number one and besides, I was shopping for the newest, hippest and fanciest baby gear on the market. For a little while there my shoe obsession was replaced with a stroller obsession.

Now, not only will the expecting mom be fashionable during those 9 glorious months, but these affordable pieces will go over well for post pregnancy. Sorry ladies, not everyone bounces back like Heidi Klum. After all, it takes almost a year to pack on that baby weight, give yourself at least the same amount of time to get back to that pre-pregnancy weight. Splurge vs. Steal (Anthro Aniseed Skirt)

Little secret...I am infatuated with stripes. No matter where I go, I catch myself being drawn to anything stripe. Wide or thin, black/white, slinky tees or poofy skirts; I don't discriminate. The Anthropologie Aniseed skirt caught my eye months ago and has been sold out for quite some time now. The skirt retailed at $128 (ouch) and we all know how underwhelming Anthro sales can be. The price never came down low enough for me to consider taking it home with me. Modcloth presented an almost identical version at a fraction of the price, throw in a coupon for 10% off and...sold!

I am all about skirts lately and this bubble hem is a first for me. I will be honest and say that this skirt is not for everyone. I wasn't even sure it was for me at first. The hem has elastic to give it the appearance of, well, a bubble and makes it feel shorter than it really is. If you are a pear shape it is probably a big no no. The skirt has folds and pleats in strange places so it feels a little awkward when worn. As my favorite style guru, Mr. Tim Gunn, always says "Make it work." So here's how I worked it. So much is happening with the skirt, it was a natural decision to pair it with a basic black tank by Mossimo. On sale now for $5. I opted for a size medium in the skirt since the consensus of the reviews on Modcloth was that the skirt ran small and the length was super short. The skirt is on the short side, but the waist was a tad roomy for me. Nothing a nice red rosette belt wouldn't fix; the skirt need a little more pizazz anyway. (As if stripes, pleats and folds weren't enough?) I wore the belt a little lower on the skirt to give it more of a paper bag waist. How'd I do Mr. Gunn?

When life gives you hum drum watermelon....

Can someone please tell me how to pick a nice juicy and sweet, yet firm, watermelon? Mushy watermelon need not apply. Our local organic market had a great sale on watermelons, 99 cents each. What a bargain! I heard once that you choose the melons that are heavier than they look. This strategy has not worked out thus far. Please enlighten me on how you choose.

So now what? What to do with a hum drum watermelon? Watermelon Agua Fresca. It is a drink commonly served throughout Mexico, very refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer day.

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Ingredients

* 4 cups cubed seeded watermelon
* 1/2 cup water
* 1/2 cup white sugar, or to taste
* 4 slices lime
* 24 fresh mint leaves
* ice

1. Puree the watermelon and water in a blender until smooth. Add sugar to taste. Cut the lime slices in half. Place a half lime slice into each of 8 glasses along with 3 mint leaves. Crush with a cocktail muddler, then fill each glass with ice. Pour in the watermelon agua fresca, and stir before serving.

Whoa Nelly, it was sweltering high of 100 degrees today. Summer is definitely here or as Nelly would say herre. (Alright, I'll stop.) Thank goodness I have my pitcher of Sangria in the fridge. Actually, hubby told me that the little princess asked for the red juice while I was gone today. "Wha? OMG tell me you didn't fill her sippy with the red juice?!" I can laugh now because I know he didn't give her the red juice, but it probably wouldn't have been very funny if she was stumbling around the house (okay maybe a teeny bit funny). It was an act of God that he didn't fill that sippy with Sangria. I should have known better and labeled the pitcher and put barb wire around the handle. What was I thinking? Another chapter lesson for the mommy diaries.

Date night rolls around quite often now. It is hard to get into the grove of coupledom when you only have a few short hours. I really try hard not to talk about the little rug rat. This is the rule that I set for myself (hubby doesn't know this). So I leave it to him to bring up the kooky things that she does. It brings a smile to both of our faces. It is kind of funny because even though we look forward to getting some time to ourselves we both so desperately miss her when we are away. What a vicious cycle.

Today we took the little princess to a morning matinee showing of Toy Story 3 in 3D. This is my life now as much as I try to resist it. I have yet to see Sex and The City 2, but here I am with an almost 3 year old at the must see kid movie of the summer, opening week....at 10am. I didn't even know the theaters even opened this early.

Ok, I'll admit it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Animation sure has come a long way. The 3D Imax experience is pretty neat. I used to work at Walt Disney Studios and the Pixar building was a high security building. Top secret stuff happening in there. Aside from the awesome effects the story line was really sweet. The sap that I am, I shed a few tears at the end. Hubby was laughing at me for crying during a cartoon movie. No spoilers, but I'll just say that when you are a mom the thought of your baby growing up will move you to tears.

The look at the movies is casual. MUST be comfy. Layers so you don't freeze your ass off. Last but not least, a large hand bag to sneak in your own snacks. Toy Story 3, go see it. The Ken doll was one of my favorite characters.

Just a quickie post. I swear I don't know where the day goes. It just seems like every task I begin goes unfinished. So I'm going to try to make this short and sweet.

Summer Sangria, Summer Love

A glass of wine at the end of the day comes highly recommend by mother's in the know. It is a key component to unwind when the kid is finally off in dream land. Sangria is a perfect adult beverage that I can have on hand and not worry about it going bad. The longer it sits the better. It reminds me of my last girls trip to Spain. Gosh that was so long ago, but I swear I remember it like it was just yesterday. Maybe a tall glass of sangria will take me back to those carefree days. See recipe for Summer Sangria below.

Hubby picked these flowers in the field while he was walking the dogs. Isn't that sweet? Actually, would you believe these are weeds? It's the thought that counts right?. He even put them in a sweet little tea cup.

Summer Sangria

Ingredients

1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 cup orange juice
1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup triple sec
1 lemon, sliced into rounds
1 orange, sliced into rounds
1 lime, sliced into rounds
1/4 cup white sugar (optional)
8 maraschino cherries
2 cups carbonated water (optional)

Directions

In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade concentrate, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange and lime, and maraschino cherries in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor. For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving.

Dad's Day

In celebration of Father's day I let dear hubby call the shots (he's allowed this once a year). After banana pancakes we packed up and headed north up to Estes Park. Estes Park is a mountain town where it is not uncommon to see a heard of elk in the middle of the road. In fact, on the ride up, a deer ran though an intersection while we were passing through the town of Lyons. Estes Park has become quite the tourist spot with cute little mom and pop boutiques and quaint restaurants.

It was decided that we would give fishing another shot. The first time around wasn't too successful, much harder with wild fish. This time we went to a stocked pond where we were practically guaranteed success. They even had nice little benches for me to sit on. This type of fishing is definitely more my speed. This outfit provided us with neon yellow marshmallow bait. Yes, marshmallow. I took hubby's word for it and refrained from doing a taste test. For a ridiculously over stocked pond, these fish weren't taking the neon yellow bait. These fish knew the fate of the neon yellow marshmallow. Hubby, the outdoors man that he is, brought along his own flies. (This is fancy outdoorsy talk for a fuzzy thing with a hook.) He hooked a fish as soon as the fly hit the water. The little princess helped reel it in like a champ. After hooking the 3rd fish within minutes, a few of the other dads gathered around to see what was going on. Some of the other dads had been there over an hour with no luck. I'm sure that they were all thinking "The sooner I can hook a fish for the kid, the sooner I can get back on my recliner to enjoy an ice cold beer." As a matter of fact, this is exactly what hubby is doing right now, enjoying an ice cold brewsky in a frosted mug. Can you guess what I'm cooking up for dinner?
